New DNA test sought in Deerfield slaying (Lake County News-Sun)
An advocate for the Libertyville Township man accused of killing a Deerfield teenager on the side of the period of a 2006 drug deal will ask for additional DNA testing in the encase.
Attorney Greg Nikitas said he’ll file a motion next week to draw blood from his retainer, Clifford Powers.
Powers, 20, was arrested in November 2006, accused of shooting 18-year-old former all-state swimmer Bernard Soya of Deerfield. The two met in a Libertyville parking lot for a mix with drugs deal. According to corroboration statements, the two began arguing over the transaction, and Powers allegedly fired several shots toward Soya’s head.
Nikitas said he wants to example Powers’ blood to compare it against hair found at the representation of the crime.
The FBI had previously tested Powers’ hair to compare it against the found hair, but the findings were inconclusive, Nikitas said.
New testing could take several months. Powers remains in Lake County Jail in lieu of $3 million bail.
